Hayt will start March 1.

Teri Hayt, the executive editor of GateHouse Media Ohio, has been named executive director of the American Society of News Editors.

"Teri is a distinguished editor and someone who we are confident will help build new partnerships and strengthen ASNE's role as a leading voice for quality journalism in a digital age,'' said ASNE President Chris Peck, associate editor of The Riverton (Wyo.) Ranger. "We're thrilled to have her take the helm."

Hayt, 58, will be the first female executive director of ASNE. She succeeds Arnie Robbins, who announced in September his desire to step down but will stay on through October to help with the transition.

"Teri brings a great mix of news experience, executive leadership and creativity to ASNE," said ASNE Vice President Pam Fine, Knight Chair for News, Leadership and Community at the University of Kansas. "She understands the opportunities and challenges that face ASNE. She's committed to keeping ASNE relevant and financially strong in a changing media landscape."

Hayt, who has worked at news operations large and small during a distinguished career, said she was honored to be named the next executive director of the organization.

"ASNE has a storied history for supporting and promoting newsroom leadership, First Amendment issues and the need for diversity in news operation," she said. "It will be a privilege to work with the ASNE board and editors across the country as we grapple with the myriad of industry issues that challenge our creativity or relevance. I can't wait to get started."

Hayt joins ASNE after two years as executive editor of GateHouse Media Ohio, including The Repository in Canton, The Independent in Massillon and The Times-Reporter in New Philadelphia. Previously, Hayt was the managing editor of the Arizona Daily Star. During 36 years in the publishing industry, she has held staff management positions at The Orlando Sentinel, NewsdayThe San Diego Union and Sports Illustrated.

She is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in journalism.

Others who have worked with Hayt spoke highly of her leadership.

"Overall, I've never worked with an editor with better judgment or more passion for the business," said Bobbie Jo Buel, editor of the Daily Star. "Teri is a strong manager, sets high expectations, is collaborative and moves fast."

ASNE, one of the nation's premier organizations for journalism leaders, is based at the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Over the past two years, ASNE has seen membership grow by 20 percent to now include about 500 print and online editors and academic leaders.

Throughout its 93-year history, ASNE has vigorously promoted First Amendment values by lobbying Congress and the executive branch and building understanding and support for First Amendment freedoms.

This spring, ASNE will launch the National Community and News Literacy Roundtables Project to help communities around the country build a robust news literacy capacity at the local level.

In October, ASNE will host its second joint conference with the Associated Press Media Editors at Stanford University that will focus on important media issues.

Hayt will start March 1.
