Consider charitable donations to ASNE Foundation

As the end of year approaches quickly, we ask our members for charitable donations to the ASNE Foundation. Your support will help us tremendously in carrying out our mission to promote leadership, First Amendment values, diversity, news literacy, and excellence and innovation in professional journalism in the digital age.

Dear ASNE member,

We write to ask for your support. In the past years, ASNE has found new ways to help members and advance journalism in the digital age. We have forged new partnerships and received new support.

ASNE focuses sharply on its core values of leadership, First Amendment/free press, diversity, news literacy, and excellence and innovation in professional journalism.

As ASNE charts its course, the ASNE Foundation has provided vital financial support for programs and operations. But we need your help, too. Why give to the ASNE Foundation? Take a look at some of the services ASNE provides:

  • We champion First Amendment values and freedom of the press. Recently, ASNE and 11 other news organizations issued an open letter regarding the restrictive credentialing agreements imposed on photographers in the entertainment industry. The letter, which expresses our concern for the press' right to publish accurate images, was to educate our members, performing artists and the public about the impact of the restrictive agreements and help them make a better-informed decision.
  • In addition, we lobby Congress on FOI issues and promote and administer 1 for All, a national program to build support for First Amendment freedoms, especially among young people.
  • We sponsor the national Sunshine Week every March, thanks to an endowment from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Sunshine Week 2015, the 10th anniversary, attracted more than 500 participants to promote the importance of open government and freedom of information. The unprecedented reporting package from The Associated Press; The McClatchy Company; USA TODAY; and Gannett Co., Inc., made a big impact this year.
  • We organized three high-profile Minority Leadership Institutes in 2015 and trained 40 emerging news leaders. We plan to continue this important training program next year.
  • We hosted the ASNE-APME #editors3D conference Oct. 16-18 at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. It was the second joint conference of the two most prestigious news organizations in the country and drew rave reviews for its excellent and topical program, speakers and panelists. We will be in Philly next year. Save these dates: Sunday, Sept. 11 - Wednesday, Sept. 14.
  • We are partnering with Florida International University once again to conduct the newsroom census, designed to meet ASNE's commitment to increasing diversity in newsrooms. In the upcoming year, we will start to retool the census to make it more relevant to digitally focused newsrooms. We want to broaden this effort to measure the impact of coverage on communities.
  • We run the largest youth journalism initiative in the country and train hundreds of high school advisers.
  • We have retooled our writing awards for the digital age, focusing on journalistic excellence.

We've done all this with a backdrop of moving to the University of Missouri in the summer of 2012 and substantially reducing our expenses.

At the same time, ASNE continues to broaden its membership criteria and its strategic partnerships. For example, a growing group of academic deans and endowed chairs have become members. And in partnering with the Reynolds Journalism Institute, we are confident our members will see exciting new programs in 2016 and beyond.

Now, more than ever, ASNE needs your support to carry out its mission and serve its members. As you consider your year-end gift-giving, please include the ASNE Foundation in your plans.

It's easy to contribute. Go to this link and click on the "Donate" button. Or you can send a check - payable to ASNEF - to ASNEF, 209 Reynolds Journalism Institute, Missouri School of Journalism, Columbia, MO 65211.
