The ASNE community was deeply saddened to learn this morning that Deborah Howell was killed on Saturday after being struck by an automobile while on vacation in New Zealand.

Howell was a reporter and editor for the Minneapolis Star, and eventually rose to become the executive editor of the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press. Later she was Washington bureau chief for the Newhouse newspaper group and editor of the Newhouse News Service, and the ombudsman for The Washington Post.

Howell was treasurer of the ASNE Foundation and had served on the foundation board since 2000. She was an ASNE board member for six years, from 1993-94 to 1998-99, and she continued to make a major contribution to the association even after her tenure on the board.

"Deborah was truly a leader, not just of ASNE, but in our profession," said Martin Kaiser, ASNE president and editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. She will be missed by so many journalists across the country to whom she was a mentor and role model."

Obituaries for Howell were published in The Washington Post and Minneapolis Star Tribune.
