ASNE/API to issue survey next week on leadership challenges

What keeps you up at night?

And, how can you best lead and manage your often bruised and disoriented staff when you also share those feelings?

ASNE and the American Press Institute would like to know your answers to those questions and more in an industrywide survey that will reach hundreds of editors, journalists, academics and retired professionals in digital and print companies.

“The past five years have challenged journalists in ways we did not anticipate,” said Linda Grist Cunningham, co-chair of the ASNE Leadership Development Committee. “We lead and manage in the midst of an industry transformation that tests our understanding of our profession, our skills and of the future of the First Amendment.”

The survey, which will be sent to all ASNE members and leaders of all daily news organizations, is designed to discover and then set priorities among the leadership and management challenges editors face every day.

The online survey will take about 20 minutes to complete. Results will be shared this summer among all participating organizations and with the national media.

The survey, which is the work of the ASNE Leadership Development Committee, will be used to tailor 2011-2012 programs for the organization's members. The committee also is co-chaired by Mizell Stewart III, editor, Evansville (Ind.) Courier & Press.
