Title:
President and Editor

Recently took early retirement several months ago after a career as an editor and publisher for Gannett with a brief detour at The New York Times.

Hometown: Living in Vineland, N.J., now for 13 years – a record for me as a wandering career Gannettoid.

Educational degree/alma mater: B.A. in English from the University of Scranton; master's degree in journalism from Syracuse University.

First paying job: Hawking the Dover Advance outside the A&P supermarket each week in eighth grade.

Mentor or role model: David Mazzarella, as editor of The Courier-News (my first real newspaper) in Bridgewater, N.J. Dave had terrific instincts for both news and features, plus a very low-key leadership style. He went on to become editor of USA TODAY before retiring from Gannett.

Favorite apps: Tide Chart (to figure out how close to pitch the umbrella and chairs on the beach at Cape May, N.J., on weekends). And on Foursquare, with all due modesty, I'd like to point out that I'm the mayor of the Vineland Public Library.

If I weren't an editor I'd be: A teacher. My wife of 41 years still figures I tricked her into a life married to a journalist instead of a college professor.

To unwind I:  run a mile or two each morning. OK, not real fast. But I don't see any other 60-somethings running through the neighborhood either.

Favorite book, TV show or movie: Book: eclectic taste. A little of everything – and anything. Heavy on mystery and history. About one book a week on average. TV: don't watch much. Movie: a tie between Gregory Peck in “Twelve O'Clock High” and John Wayne in “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.”

What music I am listening to: Not much. I listen to audio books when I run and when I drive.
