Three new members elected to ASNE board; Susan Goldberg elected president

The ASNE Board of Directors added three new members and elected a new executive committee at the organization's annual convention last week in Washington, D.C. Bloomberg News Executive Editor Susan Goldberg took the reins as ASNE president on the final day of the convention. During her acceptance speech, Goldberg talked about the pride she feels in her chosen profession and her optimism for ASNE and the future of professional journalism.

The ASNE Board of Directors added three new members and elected a new executive committee at the organization's annual convention last week in Washington, D.C.

Nancy Barnes, editor and senior vice president of the Star Tribune (Minneapolis); Stephen Engelberg, managing editor of ProPublica; and Manny Garcia, executive editor and general manager of El Nuevo Herald; were elected as new members of the board. Barnes, Engelberg and Garcia joined incumbents Mizell Stewart III, vice president/content of the newspaper division of the E.W. Scripps Company; and Margaret Sullivan, editor of The Buffalo News; as the five candidates who were elected by ASNE members to serve three-year terms on the board.

Susan Goldberg, executive editor for Bloomberg News in Washington, D.C., was elected president by the newly constituted board. The remaining members elected to the organization's executive committee were David Boardman, executive editor, The Seattle Times (ASNE Vice President); Chris Peck, editor, The Commercial Appeal, Memphis (ASNE Secretary; and Sullivan, who was named as the newest member of the committee, assuming the position of board treasurer.

  • Anders Gyllenhaal, VP News & Washington editor, The McClatchy Co.
  • Michael Oreskes, senior vice president, The Associated Press
  • Ken Paulson, president and CEO, First Amendment Center, Nashville
  • Melanie Sill, executive editor, Southern California Public Radio
  • Debra Adams Simmons, editor, The Plain Dealer (Cleveland)

In her first speech as ASNE President
, Goldberg talked about the pride she feels in her chosen profession and her optimism for ASNE and the future of professional journalism. "(I)n our print and electronic newsrooms and in journalism classrooms, I see people with the kind of passion that can change the world now and into the digital future — people who are devoted to their craft, who are committed to being their community's watchdog," she said. "This is why I'm excited about the future. And about ASNE."
